For Psychonauts superfans like myself, it’s been a long sixteen years. I was 10 years old when I played Double Fine’s debut, and it has stuck with me ever since. This is why I’m so excited for the sequel, which has been years in the making. Revealed in 2015, Psychonauts 2 is finally coming later this year, and it promises psychological platforming inside the minds of many curious characters. If you’re curious about the game (and you should be!) then let me guide you through the premise and all of the main things you need to know about Psychonauts 2 so you can decide whether you’re going to purchase it or not.
Psychonauts 2 Release Date, Platforms and Trailer
Revealed during Xbox and Bethesda’s joint E3 2021 conference, Psychonauts 2 is coming to PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S on August 25, 2021. It’ll also be on Xbox Game Pass on day one, so if you’re a subscriber you’re going to get it in your library on launch.
The latest trailer for the game is the Psychonauts 2 Action Trailer from E3. It’s very thorough, covering the game’s premise, characters, combat and more. You’ll see how delightful it looks in motion – it’s hard not to get wrapped up in its extremely versatile art style too. From teeth-laden caves to hospitals and pinball machines, there’s a lot going on, in the best way possible.
What is Psychonauts 2 about?
I’m glad you asked. Psychonauts 2 is about a Psychonaut, a psychic secret agent called Razputin Aquato. Raz was trained at Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp and in the process, discovered a brain stealing mystery and started entering people’s minds with a little pocket-sized door to solve it. Inside he found countless manifestations of mental health that he had to fight through in order to help mitigate the person’s problems.
In Psychonauts 2, Raz is now fully trained and ready to party, but the Psychonaut organization is up to something, and he has to get to the bottom of it. After rescuing Truman Zanotto in the VR spinoff Psychonauts and the Rhombus of Ruin, Raz will unravel an even more nefarious mystery at the heart of the organization he is a part of.
Psychonauts 2 Features
We can’t exactly say who, what and where, but we know that Raz will be entering more minds and exploring mental health-related concepts in the process. Psychonauts 2 is a 3D platformer so expect a fair dose of jumping, grabbing, swinging and landing when you play it. The combat is a lock-on 3D brawler style, and there are plenty of collectibles to find, such as figments of the mind’s imagination. It seems like there will be some new powers to unlock too. In the first game, you unlocked them by earning badges at summer camp, but given that Raz is all trained up now, it’s not clear how he’s going to add to his skillset.
