As part of Marvel Entertainment’s partnership with Square Enix in 2017, we’ve seen Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics’ future output shift from potential Deus Ex and Tomb Raider games, to realising the comic book titan’s superheroes in virtual form. The first result of this partnership was the co-op brawler Marvel’s Avengers, which was developed by Crystal Dynamics and launched in 2020 to middling reviews. It’s now Eidos Montreal’s turn to tackle Marvel’s catalogue of creativity, with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game release date set for 26th October.
Ahead of the launch, we’re going to run through everything you need to know about the game so you can decide whether it’s your cup of tea. Here are all the details you need about Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Guardians of the Galaxy release date, platforms and trailer
The first thing you should know is that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is launching on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. That means you’re covered regardless of platform, but just be aware that the Nintendo Switch version uses cloud streaming technology to power the game, so you’re going to need a strong and reliable internet connection to run it.
The latest trailer for the game was shown during the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, and gave us a closer look at Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’s playable characters, villains and raccoon sidekicks.
Guardians of the Galaxy gameplay and story
According to trailers seen so far, you’ll primarily play as Star-Lord and spend your time exploring alien planets with the Guardians crew. Combat engagements also focus on Star-Lord’s brawling abilities, but a key part of the loop is involving the rest of the Guardians like Groot and Rocket Raccoon to maintain combos and link together attacks.
Enemies can debuff the protagonists with weather effects, but they can also be staggered to knock them down and open them up to more dangerous attacks. Music will also play an important part in battle, augmenting certain scenes. There’s also clearly a progression system at play, as Star-Lord picks up XP after battle.
The game will also feature Telltale and Oxenfree-style narrative choices, where you can interject in conversations and make decisions that drive the narrative and the tactics of the guardians in battle. Recent trailers have also shown what appears to be some spaceship-piloting gameplay.
The story seems to involve the Universal Church of Truth and Lady Hellbender, and will naturally riff off of comic book plots and stories that fans will be familiar with. The game’s official description talks about an intergalactic war that has destabilised the galaxy, which emboldens the Guardians to try and capitalise on the turmoil with their schemes.
